Back at it today with my coach Martyn Harris.
Even as a person who plays a lot of different sports, Muay Thai has me using muscles in a way I never have before.
Learning a new skill and sport has been extremely challenging both physically and mentally, but it has also been so rewarding for both the body and the mind.
Being a beginner at anything is great in my opinion because you have a completely clean slate which means you have limitless potential to get better.
It also leaves you very humble because you know at any moment you can get put in your place.
The majority of people, as they get older, stop trying to learn or compete at new things because they’ve been told over and over again from a young age that, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”
However, this is completely untrue, and neuroscience proves this.
When you perform a new task certain neurones in your brain start to fire in a certain sequence. The more you perform these patterns the quicker the brain responds to them and they eventually get cemented over time.
Put simply, “What gets fired to together gets wired together.” Therefore, the more you practice the better you get at a said task.
Yes, it might take you a little longer to learn and master than a younger person, but it doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t learn something new.
Growing, developing and overcoming challenges is what life’s all about.
It gives life meaning and purpose which is essential. Life without purpose becomes almost untenable for most.
So, go and take up a new hobby or sport. Do that something that you’ve always wanted to do but never got round to.
Challenge yourself.
Push yourself.
It doesn’t matter what age you are.
And don’t worry about the outcome, just enjoy the process and the journey.
After all, that’s what life’s all about.

P.S. Also find yourself a great coach. It’ll go a long way to making the experience enjoyable and therefore allowing your learning to develop quicker.
P.P.S. Research shows us people who learn new tasks and keep the brain active have a younger neurological age. There’s another reason to start something new.
