They say misery loves company … and it’s true.

If you have spent any considerable amount of time with negative or low energy people, you’ll be familiar with how easy it is to get sucked into their patterns of negative self-talk, blaming everyone else, gossiping, putting people down, and using their energy for meaningless tasks that bare little to no fruit.

Their negativity doesn’t stop with themselves either, and they suck other people into their way of thinking and living too.

Like crabs in a bucket, if they see anyone else trying to escape or better themselves, they are quick to try to put that person down or dash their dreams or vision, so they remain at the same level they were at …

… or at least below where the negative person perceives themselves to be.

(For those of you not familiar with the crab mentality I’ll explain…

Crab mentality, also known as crabs in a bucket (also barrel, basket, or pot) mentality, is a way of thinking best described by the phrase “if I can’t have it, neither can you”.

The metaphor refers to a pattern of behaviour noted in crabs when they are trapped in a bucket. While anyone crab could easily escape, its efforts will be undermined by others, ensuring the group’s collective demise.

Sound familiar? I’m sure it does. You have probably faced this particular scenario more than once.)

This is why it is so important that you are prudent with who you spend your time with.

Instead of being around negative people who are chronically “unlucky” …

… choose to spend time with people who believe in you, who pull you up, and push you to raise your game and standards.

Positive and ambitious people love company too, they are just more careful with who they spend their time with, and what they use their energy on.

They know how infectious low energy can be, and they distance themselves from it as much as possible.

When you start to do this it will become quickly evident just how much the people you surround yourself with can have an impact on your mood, thoughts, belief, limitations, energy, perception of your self, image, and even your physical body.

I know how much my own life changed when I changed the people I surrounded myself the most, and I’ve seen it time and time again with others too.

So, this week my challenge is for you to take a close look at the people that are closest to you …

Those people you spend your most time with and whose advice you take, and ask yourself a few important questions …

Are they positive people?

Are they people who believe in you?

Are they people who inspire you?

Are they people who leave you with more energy?

Are they people who leave you feeling better about yourself?

Or, are they people who ….

Constantly lower your energy?

Crush your dreams?

Cause conflict and disharmony wherever they go?

And …

Do they leave you feeling worse about yourself when they’ve gone?

If it’s the latter, rather than the former, then it might be wise to seriously consider how much time you spend with those people.

They say you are the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with, and in my personal experience that holds true.

Your inner circle has a huge influence over your energy, thoughts, feelings, the actions you take, and ultimately what you feel you can achieve.

So, maybe it’s time to have a close look at your inner circle …

Are they lifting you up …

… Or are they dragging you down?

If they are dragging you down, what are you going to do about it?

Onwards & Upwards

P.S. I know from personal experience that removing yourself from certain situations, or spending less time with certain people isn’t always an easy situation to breech …

… I’ve had to do it myself a few times over the last few years with people who had become close friends …

However, although it was difficult in the beginning, it paid huge dividends in the end. As I’m sure it will for you too.
