Not only is it a myth but it’s built on a false premise and I’ll show you how false the premise is.
If you eat one gram of chicken how much protein did you eat?
It depends on how much protein is in that gram of chicken.
And if you eat one gram of chicken from a commercially raised farm compared to a gram of chicken from an organically raised, free range pasture fed chicken what do you think has more protein in it?
If you’re thinking the organic chicken then you’d be right.
If you eat a gram of protein from chicken are you getting as much protein as you would if you eat one gram of lamb or beef?
If you’re thinking there’d be more protein in the gram of beef you’d be correct.
Here’s another question for you…is one gram of any meat source a gram of protein?
If you’re thinking absolutely not, then you’re correct.
Pretty much every meat from every animal ranges from 70 % -75 % water, then you’ve got fat, then you’ve just got straight connective tissue, and if you look at the nutrition almanac a gram of chicken is listed to have .23 grams of protein and with beef it goes up to .35 or .36 and every other animal will be somewhere in that spectrum.
So when somebody says to eat a gram of protein per pound of body weight that’s like saying drink water until you’re blue in the face something ridiculous like that.
It’s completely unscientific, it doesn’t work, it has never worked and it leads to all sorts of athletes and even weekend warriors either over consuming or under consuming protein.
Because if someone is eating one gram of meat per pound of body weight and they are eating a gram of chicken or a gram of meat based as a gram of protein they are already about 70% wrong based on that recommendation, to begin with.
And since every single person alive has different genetics and different biochemistry and completely different psychological and mental emotional profile, therefore, they all react to stress differently, and your reaction to stress determines your rate of protein synthesis.
There is no such thing as any right prescription of any food macro nutrient or micro nutrient for any one individual.
How do you find out how much protein they need?
Well, that’s actually not that hard to do.
Once somebody knows the symptoms of health and well being and they know what a normal recovery time is from any given workout, for example, if you go to the gym and lift weights and you’re sore longer than 72 hours, and you’re taking a traditional approach to exercise, let’s call it 3 sets of each exercise and it’s taking you longer than 72 hours to recover then you are probably deficient in protein, fat, carbohydrate or some other nutrient.
Protein is a major building block used to repair the cells so the first thing to happen to anybody that’s protein deficient is that they don’t recover well from exercise.
They also don’t heal well from injury, and if they become protein deficient they are usually eating too much carbohydrate so they have blood sugar handling problems and typically when people aren’t eating enough protein it means they aren’t eating enough fat either because fat and protein occur together in most places.
Where you have high protein you typically have higher amounts of fat content than any plant respectively. So people typically show the symptoms of protein and fat deficiency together in most instances, not always.
And then people that are protein deficient, for example, someone who’s eating a vegetarian based diet for so called religious reasons oftentimes end up becoming a syndrome xer and then a type 2 diabetic, all in the name of their healthy religious philosophy.
But they forget their guru is a Hindu man who is typically raised in a region of the world where they never ate a lot of meat to begin with, so they have the genetics for it.
The only way you can identify if you are eating right is…
1. You feel satiated and you can last comfortably for 4 hours in between meals and,
2. You have mental clarity and improved energy, and a greater sense of well being, your capacity to handle stress is greater and you do not suffer from cravings.
In short, you need to listen to your body and not follow the dogma.
