It’s no wonder they’ve been finding Prozac in our drinking water since 2004, as, in the decade leading up to 2001, the number of prescriptions for antidepressants went up from nine million per year to 24 million per year.
Since then these stats have continued to rise to the point where in 2016 – 2017, around 64 million antidepressant prescriptions were issued in the UK alone.
This is just over 2.5 million fewer prescriptions than there are individuals living in this collection of countries.
Shocking right?
Even more shocking is that from 2015 – 2018 antidepressant prescriptions cost the NHS £672.5 million
That’s a lot of money.
It’s also a lot of money that in reality shouldn’t be spent as research shows that antidepressants take are among the least effective drugs, and often make the situation worse, especially in the long term.
(We also need to look into why so many people report feeling depressed today, it that’s for another time.)
In fact, studies have repeatedly shown antidepressants work no better than placebo for mild to moderate depression.
A 2017 systematic review of 131 placebo-controlled studies found that “all trials were at high risk of bias” and that clinical significance was questionable.
Add to this fact that antidepressants are also neurotoxic & possible side effects include worsening depression, self-harm, violence & suicide, increased risk for diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, stroke and dementia, and depletion of various nutrients (depending on the type of drug you take).
An argument could be made that maybe it’s time we got to the root of peoples issues rather than dosing them up with medication so they feel numb.
Research has shown repeatedly that there is no promising medical treatment for depression and probably there never can be for the simple reason that depression is primarily rooted in the complexity of human emotions and experiences.

So, instead of giving people neurotoxic medication we should be implementing strategies to support healthy brain function, so people can deal with their issues.
These strategies would include:-
- eating a healthy diet rich in organic whole foods,
- drinking plenty of clean water to keep the body hydrated,
- eating probiotic-rich foods to keep the gut healthy
- reducing your exposure to toxins
- exercising regularly
- spending time in nature,
- exposing the body to sunlight daily,
- enjoying time with loved ones,
- finding a purpose and passion in life
- meditation and breathing practices
- journaling or other mental & emotional methods to clear the mind
- Talking through your issues with people you trust
- limiting your screen time
- not exposing yourself to blue light after sunset
- turning your WiFi off at night
- getting adequate sleep etc
Utilising the methods above to create a healthy body and a healthy brain would at least in my opinion …
…be a better option than using potentially lethal drugs that have virtually no evidence behind them to suggest they provide meaningful help to patients, don’t you think?
Is my personal experience of working with clients I can say that so often feelings of depression and anxiety disappear when we start to work on implementing all the principles above.
Having a purpose in life and a healthy body internally and externally to follow your dreams and goals goes a long way to lifting that fog.
There’s no chemical solution for a spiritual problem.

P.S. As for the claim that depression is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain, there is no scientific evidence to back this up and instead a lot of the evidence suggests unhealthy living conditions are at the heart of the problem.
You can read that evidence here:
