If you’ve been following me for any period of time you will know that I often mention just how vital it is to keep your gut healthy.

This is because a healthy gut is a key factor in creating vibrant health and vitality.

Without restoring and maintaining your inner ecosystem in your digestive tract …

…. which means promoting the growth of beneficial intestinal microflora …

… you will never be able to reach your health potential, and you will be open to illness and infection.

Beneficial bacteria are vital organisms that help your body defend against disease-causing bacteria, viruses, yeast, and other dangerous invaders, and without them, unfriendly bacteria will be left to flourish.

So … what’s the most effective way to create a healthy inner ecosystem?

Well, three of the best “edible tools” to promote a healthy gut are:

  • Cultured vegetables & Fermented foods
  • Young coconut kefir or raw milk kefir
  • High-quality probiotics

(Although, if you have a chronic gut issue, I wouldn’t recommend cultured vegetables, fermented foods or milk kefir, as they could be too powerful for your gut, and lead to further pain and irritation.)

You may see probiotics sold in small jars, as a powder or packaged into capsules, however, the best probiotics are found in fermented foods (and in probiotics from a select few companies.)

Why?

Because the probiotics in fermented foods are alive, and they are more likely to survive the perils of the digestive tract.

In fact, the probiotics found in fermented foods are surrounded by a “protective delivery matrix.”

This “matrix” keeps them safe from stomach acid, bile, and digestive juices as they move from your mouth and into your colon (where they populate and set up a healthy and happy home.)

As you have probably seen, probiotic products on the market vary greatly in their potency and effectiveness (as well as their cost).

The truth is that most probiotics do not live up to their claims, and some are not even natural.

Many probiotics also boast about how many different strains of beneficial bacteria they include, or the number of colony-forming units (CFUs) they contain.

Unfortunately, these numbers can be misleading. The bacteria may not be natural to the human GI tract, or even be compatible with each other.

Instead of looking for the most strains or the most CFUs, you must look for how viable and active the cultures are and how well they will work in your gut.

For example, Body Ecology’s CocoBiotic contains a smart blend of beneficial bacteria and yeast specifically chosen to work in a symbiotic or mutually beneficial way.

This is also true of the probiotics from companies such as Bioptimizers, Seed & Dr. Mercola, Bio Kult, Body Biotics, etc

This way, the beneficial microflora can withstand harsh stomach acids to reach the walls of the intestine and recolonise it more effectively.

So, be extra vigilant with the products you chose.

The question then remains if you are eating fermented vegetables, do you also need probiotics?

My answer would be, Yes.

Even though just one mouthful of fermented vegetables can provide far more beneficial bacteria than the majority of probiotic supplements, it is wise to get many different strains of probiotics.

This is because the “good” bacteria in your gastrointestinal system can only provide you with optimum health if the proper balance of different types of bacteria is maintained in your gut.

Remember, 80% of your immune system actually lives in your gut, and you want to keep it as healthy as possible.

Unfortunately, there are a multitude of ways that the “good” bacteria in your gut can be killed off – especially in today’s overly toxic world – with antibiotics, chlorine, processed foods, sugar and stress being able to negatively affect the delicate balance of bacteria in your gut.

This is why a healthy diet and lifestyle is imperative, and why it is essential to restore and maintain a healthy, diverse inner ecosystem in your intestines full of beneficial bacteria.

Those essential bacteria are masters of homeostasis, and as I mentioned above, they will help to defend your body against pathogens, and other dangerous invaders …

… and they do this by helping to cultivate, nourish, and repair your abundant and flourishing microbiome … which as you can see, is vital when it comes to bulletproofing and building a healthy body.
