Now those of you who know me, know I am a fan of juicing and eating raw organic fruits and vegetables. And those of you who don’t, well you’re about to get a little insight into why I’m such a fan.
So let’s get straight to it…
Below are 3 questions we need to answer first.
1. Why is eating food in its natural state, organic, unprocessed and unrefined, so vital to the maintenance of good health?
2. What is lacking in our modern diet that makes us so susceptible to degenerative diseases
3. What natural elements in food may play a key role in unlocking the secrets of life extension, better quality of living and increased sporting performance?
Well let’s listen to what Dr Edward Howell the author Enzyme Nutrition has to say on the matter…
“When we are young our normal ability to produce enzymes internally promotes rapid growth, and in most cases prevents serious illnesses. But as we age, our internal enzymes become depleted. Unless we do something to stop their one-way flow out of the body, our digestive and eliminative capacities weaken; this can lead to acute health complaints, obesity and chronic illnesses.”
So as we can see from the quote above it’s not enough to rely on our body to produce these enzymes.
Although our digestive organs produce some enzymes internally, we have to take responsibility for own on gut health and eat foods rich in enzymes, nutrients, vitamins and minerals to help our body digest food and detoxify.
Without these enzymes we cannot assimilate food. Enzymes make the digestion of food possible.
When you consume junk food, the food has had its enzymes removed for a longer self life. Companies add additives, preservatives and chemicals to enhance the products survival.
If food doesn’t have enzymes, it can’t rot. I’m sure you’ve seen the pictures of the Western World’s favourite burger that has been left untouched for 7 years, looking exactly the same as the day it was served. Surely if nothing else can convince you to stay away from junk and to eat organic whole foods then that picture surely will.
And this food that is unfortunately consumed far too often – daily in some cases – food without enzymes challenges your digestive and immune system.
Food enzymes are necessary for optimal health and must come from uncooked foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, raw sprouted grains, unpasteurised dairy, raw fermented food and food enzyme supplements.
Enzymes give the body it’s strength and vigour. It’s capacity to maintain its normal weight. They fight disease and enhance the bodies self healing mechanisms.
Without sounding trying to sound too mean, next time you’re walking down the high street, you’re in the mall, at the cinema etc take a look around you. At least half of the human race is sick. I would say more but I’m feeling generous today.
There are no healthy people living on the conventional diet. Even young adults who feel fit have health defects.
So what does all this tell us?
It tells us that unfortunately the saying ‘an apple a day will keep the doctor away’ just isn’t true in today’s wold. Especially if that apple isn’t organic and is laden with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. In fact it could actually do you more harm than good.
In the modern world of mass pollution, heavy metals, toxic water, elevated stress, processed and unrefined foods, optimal nutrition is vital, especially at a cellular level.
So if optimal health and performance are your goals then raw, unprocessed, unrefined organic foods should be a major part of your diet.
I’m off eat some raw sauerkraut!
